About Me

Designing the Interior of Your Home Hey! My name is Erica and I live alone in Sydney, Australia. When I moved into my current home, I was shocked to find that some of the rooms hadn't been touched since the 1990s. It was like walking into a time machine and it made me want to cry. I called my friend who is an interior designer and he helped me to work out how I wanted each room to look and which features I would like to remove or add to the space. I am really pleased with the results and I would like to offer you some tips on how you can create the perfect interior.

How to Choose the Right External Shutters for Your Home

External shutters can enhance the appearance of a home's exterior, and also protect windows in case of high winds and heavy storms. Shutters can also block out light and noise, which is good for those who suffer from migraines, or who just want to get a good night's sleep! When you're ready to shop for external shutters for your home, note a few details and features to consider, so you know you choose the right type for your home and your needs in particular.

Maximum protection

If you need maximum protection against wind, storms, noise and the like, you may want roller shutters. These will offer the most coverage of the windows, since they roll along a track inside the window frame, creating a tight seal. Plastic shutters easily absorb noise, creating a quieter interior. Plastic is also very strong and durable, so these shutters are less likely to be damaged due to hail and other flying debris during a storm. However, roller shutters may not be considered very decorative. They roll out of the way when not in use, so they don't add much visual interest to the home's exterior.

Wood shutter style

Wood shutters offer the most style for the exterior of your home, as the wood has a natural look and feel that is very traditional and attractive. Folding open the shutters also gives the windows a type of framing, which keeps them from looking plain and dull. Wood shutters can also offset the look of your home's metal gutters and downspouts, and metal siding.

Match the style of wood shutters to your home's overall style; solid panels are very modern, whereas board and batten shutters are more rustic and better for a country-style home. Bahamas or Bermuda shutters attach at the top of the window frame and get pushed out from the bottom, offering the most protection from sun and rain; this is why they're popular in tropical areas. These are good for creating a beach-style or tropical feeling for your home, and are a good choice for maximum sun protection.

Decoration

If you want shutters that are purely decorative and which don't close, opt for oversize hardware, including hinges and hooks that keep the shutters in place. Be sure you choose a colour that complements but contrasts with your home's exterior colour. Bright white against a red brick home, or black against a white home, for example, will make those shutters stand out and give your home's exterior some personality and style.
